Samuel F.B. Morse sails for Europe from New York City.

(Nov.) It is while studying and painting, first in Rome and then in Paris, that Morse devises the idea for the telegraph, which he later said crystallized for him when he left Le Havre aboard the Sully on October 6, 1832.
